03Remix

“Remix” usually refers to recombining pre-existing media content to create new works (Gunkel, 2016). Take the artists of the 1980s:

  1. Paula Scher, Best of Jazz, 1979

Paula Scher, between 1970 and 1980, her work combined constructivist expressions and techniques. Design a series of impressive results through refactoring of font elements.

2. April Greiman

April Greiman uses digital technology as a design tool, working with MacVision and video cameras. New images are obtained by repeated scanning and tiling. It was her willingness to experiment with THE use of NEW media that led to her work in what became known as THE “NEW WAVE” style (April Greiman THE NEW WAVE (1980s), 2021).

One problem is that the “remix” design is challenged by piracy because it uses elements that already exist. However, “remix” is fundamentally a transformative practice, and when it is not a derivative but a subversive product of change, its impact on society is more beneficial than harmful (Gallagher, 2017).

In my opinion, the remix is a way of creativity and can help people break the inherent labels of elements and exercise our divergent thinking by trying different combinations. Not only that, but now we have more tools to help us “mix” our work.

For example, artist Dmitry Karpov used Maxon Cinema4D to interpret realistic paintings of Soviet socialism.
